braces for adults is more common than you think

One in four orthodontic patients is an adult. It is becoming more routine for adult patients to seek orthodontic treatment for their smiles as well as overall oral health. Adult teeth are able to be treated similarly to younger patients with a treatment plan that fits their lifestyle. Braces for adults may seem intimidating, but it’s becoming more normal. Our initial consultation can provide more information on the comfortable, easy way of achieving a lasting, beautiful smile.

Why Get Braces as an Adult?

The benefits of braces extend far beyond having a beautiful, straight new smile. With better-aligned teeth, your overall oral health will improve. This means you will have a lower chance of developing gum diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis. And with less food getting stuck between teeth, there is less of a risk of cavities. After your teeth are corrected by braces, they’ll also find it easier to brush and floss. It’s a great way to improve oral hygiene habits, which can eliminate bad breath.

If you have a speech impediment because of bite problems, braces can correct it. They can also help to reduce any grinding and chipping of teeth that could result from an uneven bite.  A straighter smile can increase your confidence and self-esteem. Most adults find that the investment pays off as soon as braces come off!

Types of Braces for Adults

When your orthodontist recommends orthodontic treatment, it’s essential to explore all available options to ensure their treatment plan fits their lifestyle. After all, braces aren’t what they used to be! Two of the most common options for braces are traditional metal braces and clear aligners. While both options provide the same outcome, the aligning methods differ, and one may be more suitable for some patients than the other.

Traditional metal braces are the most common choice amongst patients, providing reliable, cost-effective, durable orthodontic solutions. Even the most severe misalignments are treated with conventional metal braces.

Clear aligners are a popular alternative to traditional metal braces. They provide all the benefits of traditional metal braces while being discreet, requiring fewer office visits, and allowing patients to eat, brush, and floss normally. These clear aligners require more diligence and attention than traditional metal braces, making them ideal for responsible patients who wear their aligners as recommended.

What to Expect at Your Orthodontist Appointment

When you visit our office, Dr. Schwendeman will examine their teeth, mouth, and jaw much as a dentist will. We will then recommend treatment based upon his evaluation. Our team may also take an impression of your teeth so we can create a mold.

During the next trip, your dentist will place braces in your child’s mouth using a special adhesive. You’ll get special instructions on foods to avoid while you’re wearing braces. These include hard candy, pizza crust, and bagels. Caring for teeth with braces is similar in that your child will need to brush, floss, and rinse as usual.

Once you have braces, you’ll return for visits every four to eight weeks so your orthodontist can adjust the braces and make sure your teeth are aligning. When the treatment is complete, your orthodontist will remove the braces and polish your smile. Get ready to see some beautiful new pearly whites!
