Orthodontic Treatment Journey
Phase 1
Bozeman Smiles and the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children receive an initial check-up with an orthodontist no later than age 7. By this age, children’s teeth and jaws have developed enough to evaluate how their smile is progressing. This information can be helpful in determining if any removable appliances or fixed appliances can help promote a healthy jaw and teeth structure as the mouth matures.
If Dr. Schwendeman notices any severe issues in young patients, he may recommend Phase 1 treatment. This could include metal brackets or other appliances that will move your child’s baby teeth as their smile and jaw develop. Usually, this treatment plan lasts around 12 months; however, more severe orthodontics issues may require 6 to 18 months of phase 1 orthodontic treatment.
Phase 2
After Phase 1 orthodontic treatment is complete, young patients will generally begin phase 2 of their orthodontic treatment plan. During this phase, the goal is to position the permanent teeth in a way that creates a beautiful, mature smile as well as good oral health. Having permanent teeth with proper alignment decreases the risk of future dental issues.
Adult Braces
One in four orthodontic patients is an adult. It is becoming more routine for adult patients to seek orthodontic treatment for their smiles as well as overall oral health. Adult teeth are able to be treated similarly to younger patients with a treatment plan that fits their lifestyle. You’ll achieve placement with the accuracy of a jig, but with the chairside efficiency of a tray. Precision occlusal fit and a compact design deliver confident placement while improving patient comfort.

Types of Retainers
Hawley Retainers
The Hawley retainer, one of the most common types, is a removable retainer made of a combination of metal wires and sturdy acrylic, and is designed to keep your teeth in place. This retainer is specially made from impressions of your teeth so that it fits snugly and comfortably in the roof of your mouth, while any wire or acrylic framing keeps your teeth in perfect position. The acrylic can also be personalized with a variety of colors.
Fixed Retainers
Bonded lingual retainers are cemented directly to the inside surface of your lower canines (eye teeth). This is one of the best ways to prevent your lower teeth from shifting as it is permanently attached! As with removable retainers, it is important to keep them clean. When brushing, carefully clean the inside of your lower teeth as well as the wire. If your retainer breaks at any time during the retention phase, please do not adjust it yourself. Clear Retainer
The clear retainer is a clear removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of teeth. Clear retainers have no metal wires and are virtually invisible. They are very durable and easy to wear.
